Arctic Program

Northern Oil and Gas and the Environment

Renewed interest in the Arctic's hydrocarbon resources presents the possibility of a dramatic explosion of industrial development in the North, bringing with it concerns of social disruption and environmental degradation, especially for Northern peoples.

What We're Doing

Pembina's Energy Solutions group is contributing its experience and knowledge of the oil and gas industry to support the efforts of northern-based groups and communities to be effectively engaged in decision-making processes. In 2006 we will continue to deliver Northern Oil and Gas and the Environment Workshops in Alberta and in the North. In addition, we will be pursuing renewable energy projects, as well as "solutions-based" workshops to contribute to long-term, sustainable energy development in the Arctic.

Please contact Peggy Holroyd to learn more about these and the Pembina Institute's other Arctic projects.

The Pembina Institute will be hosting the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board (MVLWB) for an Alberta based, Northern Oil and Gas and the Environment Workshop this spring. Unfortunately this workshop is not open for general registration. If you are interested in attending a Pembina Oil and Gas workshop in the future, please contact us.

Past Workshops

The Pembina Institute has successfully run the following Northern Oil and Gas and the Environment Workshops in the following regions:

  • 12 Alberta based 5 day workshops (Sept 2002 to May 2006)
  • 7 Northern based community workshops in Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik, Aklavik, Yellowknife, Whitehorse, Fort Good Hope and Watson Lake (March 2005, June 2006)
  • 2 Alberta based coal bed methane workshops (June/July 2006)
  • 2 youth focused workshops in Yellowknife (Oct/Nov 2005)
